The house is situated in a peaceful, quiet setting, surrounded by woods and a century-old stonewall.
As the trees give way and you enter the driveway, you see a large front lawn with a flower garden and a 6 x 6 ft wooden sandbox. Crocuses, hyacinths and daffodils greet you in late spring. Early summer brings red and white colors of tulips followed by violet blossoms of lilacs and daylillies. Rosehip bushes and a crabapple tree take on the bloom in mid-summer accompanied by stargazer and tiger lilies in August. |

Drive up to the porch, turn off the ignition key, step outside and close the car door. Your life will never be the same. The smells and silence of nature will envelope you. The euphoric feeling of getting away from it all and having your life back wholly to yourself will engulf you.
Let your kids go out to explore the land while you enter the house and unpack. Large mudroom by the side door serves as a great buffer between the neatness and cleanliness of the house and messy outdoors. This room does a wonderful job of keeping all the sand and dirt that kids tend to bring with them into the house confined to just this one room. You can use it to store clothes, shoes, skis and swimming gear. There are ski racks along one of the walls. |

Step further and you will find yourself entering the kitchen. Large three-panel window overlooks the front lawn and makes the room sunny and bright. While making preparations for lunch or dinner, you may enjoy the view of your kids playing outside, building castles in the sandbox or making an army of snowmen. The kitchen has lots of space to eat and cook. It has an open floor design and can be entered from both sides. It features all the standard amenities (including microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker and toaster), large fridge, lots of cabinets, a cooking island, high chair for a small child and a dinner table. The latest addition is espresso/cappuccino machine. There is a sideboard and hutch with books and a stereo system that plays tapes, CDs and radio. Besides an assortment of various novels and detectives [download list of books], there are cook books, hiking books, local history books, as well as tapes and CDs for both children and adults. |

The living room has a wall of windows that look out onto the deck. Together with the cathedral ceiling they give an airy natural feeling to this large room bringing the surrounding woods closer into the house. One part of the living room is a family play area. It has two sofas (one is a large sofa bed for two) and a small table with chairs and toys for children. A wall unit conveniently hides a cable TV, VCR and DVD. It also stores a variety of board games [download list of games] and movies for both children and grownups. During frosty winter evenings, it is a delight to take on a game of checkers or scrabble next to a flickering warmth of a fireplace. |

The other part of the living room is a formal dining area. It has a sliding glass door that leads to a large deck that overlooks the blackberry garden. Our guests enjoy its delicious treats during the months of August and September. Kids learn patience and responsibility by picking up large sumptuous berries amid lots of prickly vines and leaving unripe ones for the next day. During the winter months the caretaker shovels the snow from the deck (tenants are not responsible for this service), so the BBQ grill can be used anytime throughout the year. The deck is equipped with a child gate installed at the top of the stairs. |

Master bedroom has a king-size bed and a sliding glass door that opens to the deck. The room is large, has a full bath and a walk-in closet. There are two guest bedrooms upstairs (child gates are installed at the bottom and top of the stairs) that share a full bath. They are located on the opposite sides of the house and one of them has a very cozy den, which our children enjoy as their sleeping quarters. There are two twin-size cots in the den and the kids imagine that this is their own small house with dolls, all sorts of animals, princes and princesses. One of the guest bedrooms has two twin beds while the other has a full bed and a child’s crib. All the bedrooms, including the master bedroom, look east. Sometimes, you can wake up and, still lying in bed, follow the sun as it peaks through and above the trees, starting a new day. |
